In April 2022, we were very pleased to note that the Austrian legislator has fulfilled its responsibility to ensure high-quality dental care for the Austrian population with the Specialist Orthodontists Act.
An orthodontic practitioner is one who un- derstands that orthodontics has its risks and benefits and these must be delivered clearly to patients. Orthodontics is a niche speciality in many countries because of its complexities that take 3-4 years to learn after obtaining a dental degree.
The further training to become a specialist orthodontist is not just a structural measure
supported by public authorities to ensure the qualification of dentists. The approval of specialist orthodontists also offers patients a safe and reliable point of orientation in their search for a specialised practitioner.
Following the unanimous decision in the Austrian Parliament to support the recognition of the speciality, it is all the more regrettable that the adoption of the European quality standard in orthodontics has been delayed due to the objection of three federal provinces.
EFOSA appeals to the governments of Vienna, Carinthia and Burgenland to abandon
their opposition to the introduction of the specialist orthodontists.

Qualität und Verlässlichkeit in der Kieferorthopädie
Mit großer Freude haben wir im April 2022 zur Kenntnis genommen, dass der österre-
ichische Gesetzgeber mit dem Fachzahnärzte-Kieferorthopädie-Gesetz seiner Verantwortung für eine qualitativ hochwertige zahnärztliche Versorgung der österreichischen Bevölkerung nachgekommen ist.
Ein Kieferorthopäde ist ein Zahnarzt, der weiß, dass die Kieferorthopädie ihre Risiken und Vorteile hat, und diese müssen den Patienten klar vermittelt werden. Die Kieferorthopädie ist in vielen Ländern ein Nischenspezialgebiet, weil ihre Komplexität eine 3- bis 4-jährige Ausbildung nach dem Zahnmedizinstudium erfordert.
Die Weiterbildung zum Fachzahnarzt für Kieferorthopädie ist nicht nur eine strukturelle Maßnahme, die in staatlicher Trägerschaft die Qualifikation der Zahnärzte gewährleistet. Die Anerkennung als Fachzahnarzt oder Fachzahnärztin für Kieferorthopädie bietet auch den Patienten eine sichere und verlässliche Orientierungshilfe bei der Suche nach einem spezial-
isierten Behandler.
Nach dem einstimmigen Beschluss im österreichischen Parlament, die Anerkennung des Fachgebietsbezeichnung zu unterstützen, ist es umso bedauerlicher, dass sich die Verabschiedung des europäischen Qualitätsstandards in der Kieferorthopädie durch den Einspruch dreier Bundesländer verzögert.
EFOSA appelliert an die Regierungen von Wien, Kärnten und Burgenland, ihren Widerstand gegen die Einführung der Fachzahnärzte für Kieferorthopädie aufzugeben.
